On the Seventh Day of Winter ’12 Marc Benioff Gave To Me – Global Search Improvements, Siteforce General Availability, Divisions and Quotes Now Married, Private Chatter Messages, Chatter Files Enhancements, Social Contacts in Salesforce and New Features and Enhanced Usability.
The first comment every Admin will hear after a new release is “Why is this here?” While changes to the User Interface are usually a huge improvement and make navigating Salesforce.com easier for end users, there is always an adjustment period. In the Winter ’12 release there are none of the drastic changes, such as moving the Settings option into a drop down under the users name or moving the search box, that will can send end users into a tailspin. There are however a few improvements that are worth pointing out to your users in order to improve their Salesforce.com usability experience.
There have been a number of Enhancements to the Global Search feature. This is something that users can benefit from immediately, however it is always helpful if their Admin team can point out the changes and explain how to use them.
The 1st thing users will notice is that when they search the Chatter Results will now be listed in an expandable box right above the Records results. This is a bit more intuitive then the previous Tab off to the side in search results.
2nd Users that have changed their Search Options in order to filter results to select objects will now see their Selected Objects first but will also see an option to Search More Objects.
3rd Users will now see an option to either search an object or search again. Now by default if the user drills down into the Accounts object, the Search Button will ask if they want to Search Accounts meaning they will only search Account records. If the user clicks back on the Records link the Search Button will change to Search Again, which means they will be back to searching all objects. This is a great new features that will again make searches much more intuitive, however end users might not pick up on this without some direction.
4th Users will now see only the first 5 records returned for each object in Search results. If there are more results users can click on Show More just as they would have before. Also users will be able to change their Search Options by clicking the Edit link next to SELECTED OBJECTS.
Finally a big bonus in Winter ’12 for both Users and Admin. After drilling down into an object users will now have the ability to Customize the columns in their Search Results. Even better Admins will now be able to Customize Columns and Buttons for All users. Admins also have the option now to allow users to Filter results on an object.
Admins will be able to specify up to 10 fields on an object that will become available to users to filter search results. The Filter option will only be provided to users if it is set up by the System Administrator, so before Winter ’12 is released, we Admins may want to take a few minutes to discuss with our power users which Fields would be most useful as Filter options.
