12 Days of Salesforce Winter ’12, Day Twelve

Posted by Vijay Budhram on October 12, 2011

On the Twelfth Day of Winter ’12 Marc Benioff Gave To Me – More Flexible Security, Analytics, Analytics, Analytics, Knowledge Enhancements, Cloud-Based Flow Designer, A New Enhanced Reports Tab, Global Search Improvements, Siteforce General Availability, Divisions and Quotes Now Married, Private Chatter Messages, Chatter Files Enhancements, Social Contacts in Salesforce and New Features and Enhanced Usability.

So, I saved one of my favorite Winter ’12 features for last, the release of Permission Sets.  At Riptide we often see Salesforce Instances where there are very specific security permissions required for small groups or even individual users.  Previously the only way to deal with this was to create a one off profile for a user, which can lead to an unmanageable number of profiles in larger Salesforce instances.  With the Winter ’12 release however this has been addressed with the creation of Permission Sets.

Permission Sets allow Salesforce Administrators to give permission to a user without the need to create a new custom profile.  For instance, if you have a Salesperson using a custom profile assigned to all Salespeople and he or she takes on a new responsibility you can assign a permission set to give access for this task.  While each users is only able to have one Profile they can have multiple permission sets.

The new Permission Sets feature in Winter ’12 can assign permissions for Objects, Fields, User Permissions, Apex Classes, Visualforce pages and Service provider access.  Permissions that are not included in Permission Sets are Assigned apps, Tab Settings, Record Type assignments, Page Layouts, Desktop client access, Login hours and Login IP ranges.  Once a permission set is created it can be assigned to users.  You will also have the ability view all of the users that are assigned to a permission set.

And there you have Riptides 12 Days of Winter ’12.  If you would like to dive deeper into any of the Features of Salesforce Winter ’12 you can find the full release notes at http://bit.ly/pJ7FjW or if you would like to speak with one of our Winter ’12 Experts at Riptide, please contact us and we would be happy to work with you to effectively use all of the new Winter ’12 features available to you!
